Back Running
Eighty three days is how long it took for the sports doctor to approve a little jog on the treadmill. It seemed like forever to me, I had missed it so much, and my anxiety levels were going through the roof, especially since I also had to come of my HRT through this period due to the DVT.
So how did I feel, well for starters I was nervous, I thought what if my legs crumble, what if I have forgotten how to run, what if my ankle feels unstable, it was a bit like that dream where your lining up at the start of a race and the gun goes off, and you look down and your laces are undone!
I hopped on the treadmill and set it to walking pace just to get comfortable, then after five minutes I increased it to a jog and just sat at this pace for one min, then walked for a minute. I did this five times. It may not seem like a lot but it was the best. I felt so happy to be back moving and am happy to report my legs remembered what to do.
Over the past two weeks, I have achieved a slow build, giving it a few days in between each run to see how my ankle reacts. So far so good, then last Sunday I went outside, yes the outdoors, with Luke and I did two minutes on, one minute off, six times. Man I am cruising now!!
I have now built up to fifteen minutes of running in total (with the walk breaks), so tomorrow I will head out and try a couple of blocks of five minutes straight. I am being cautious, and could probably push a little bit more, but I have been so patient waiting for this time, that I do not want to go backwards….. plus my race isn’t until October - haha.
On a non running note we are progressing well with the documentary and in the process of planning some events to show this and perhaps add some fun runs in too. So stay tuned.
